Why I Won't Be Celebrating Australia Day: An Open Letter
January 26th, 1788. The day we now praise as Australia Day. Personally I find it disgusting that we chose such a date to celebrate and the day is one I will not be enjoying unlike other, less caring, Australian citizens. But that poses a question to most; what happened in Australia on Jan 26th? Well that day in 1788 was the day that the First Fleet set foot on Australian soil and claimed it as British territory. Aka the day that White Europeans did what they are best at and walked into another country and used their white superiority to claim it as their own. The thing that is most ridiculous is that most Australian's in recent studies couldn't explain why it is we celebrate that date. Why are we so hell bent on keeping a racist celebration when the people who are advocating for it to stay the same can't even identify what the issue with the date is! The issue with the date is simple; it ostracises the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities within the country...
